• child asks for lessons
• he/she is fascinated with the piano
• he/she likes to learn

Is the piano a good choice for my child’s first instrument?

• The piano is often called the complete musical instrument….The foundation received on the piano at the beginning of music study will serve the child in any musical direction he chooses to pursue, whether or not she continues the piano.  [It]…provides an ideal preparation for later study of other musical instruments.
• It is accessible
• It is easy…(to immediately produce pleasing sounds)

Is musical talent important?

• Desire and motivation come first
• Application is 90% of talent

What is the purpose and goal of piano lessons?

• To enrich and broaden a child’s experience.  Music becomes a satisfying experience that gives direction to the basic needs of self-expression an appreciation for beauty and an outlet for emotional release.
• To add to basic core courses…unfortunately school music and art programs are sometimes misconceived as secondary in relation to the school curriculum.
• To develop appreciation for music

What elements make a good teacher?

The piano teacher exerts considerable influence over your child, and you want to make sure the association is pleasant and beneficial.

Teachers vary in training and proficiency.  Some have college music degrees, others have had only a few years of training…Credentials, such as degrees, performance background or professional certification, are important criteria in determining standards.  However, training and background alone will not assure competent teaching.  Other significant factors are the teacher’s personality, experience, interest in teaching and “track record”.

Once lessons have commenced, you can evaluate your child’s relationship with the teacher:  Is she eager to go to lessons?  Does he have a good attitude upon returning from lessons?  Unfortunately, these factors cannot be assessed until lessons begin…If you locate a teacher who has qualities such as a genuine love and understanding of music, imagination, enthusiasm, patience, sincerity and dedication and a sense of humor, you probably will have selected an excellent beginning teacher.

How important is a good beginning teacher?

…a “beginning” piano teacher must impart all basic music information to your child, such as beginning technical skills, notation, rhythm, and sight-reading habits.  Much of what your child will be able to accomplish in music will be based on a solid foundation in beginning fundamentals.  In most cases the beginning years are critical because first impressions, good or bad, persist.

How do I find the right teacher?

• By word of mouth
• Attend recitals given by various teachers’ pupils; you will be able to make a judgment about the quality of work this teacher does.
• Through a college or university
• At a music store
• From a school music specialist or church musician

Is an interview necessary?

• Recommended for your appraisal of the teacher
• Recommended for the teacher’s appraisal of you child
• Recommended for your child’s reaction to the teacher
